North West Carnival Initiative - Masterclasses in Carnival lighting and mobile sound techniques

Date / Time: Thursday 9th September & Friday 10th September 2010 from 10.00 – 5.00pm.
Venue: The Gasyard Arts Factory
Cost: £25.00 (full fee) or £10.00 (concession). Bursaries also available.

The North West Carnival Initiative will be hosting two Days of Masterclasses in Carnival lighting and mobile sound techniques for large-scale & small scale props.

The workshops will be delivered by Inishowen Carnival Group and is sure to be of interest to community workers, art students, artists or volunteers building creative skills in the area or who want develop their own skills and benefit their community.

The pieces created during the workshops will be showcased at the Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival of Light Parade on the 31st October 2010.

Community theatre event - in memory of Sammy Ferrin & Mary Seymour

Tongue ‘n Cheek Community Theatre Company will be hosting a fundraising event in memory of their valued members Sammy and Mary who died in October 2008. Both were founders of the Community Arts Forum in 1993 and were highly respected in the community theatre movement.

A Night at the Silent Movies will be held on Friday 10 September in the Crumlin Star Social Club (the former Forum cinema) followed by music and dancing. Some surprises are in store and it is sure to be a fun evening.

Fancy dress is preferred. There will be prizes for the best gangster and moll.

Admission £6 including ballot. All proceeds will go to Cancer Lifeline.

“We Share the Same Sky” - Stravaganza

Stravaganza invite you to enjoy the results of the Stravaganza Summer School held in partnership with the University of Ulster, School of Creative Arts.

Following a series of workshops led by the legendary Cleveland Watkiss this event marks the beginning of a ‘new work’ by Stravaganza Production Company. Stravaganza is an inclusive company engaging people with and without disabilities in a process of reciprocal learning through creative multicultural collaboration.

Media personality Gerry Anderson will host a ‘montage’ of music and song, movement and multimedia

Aspects Literature Festival - North Down Heritage Centre

The Aspects Literature Festival attracts readers and writers from all over Ireland to the North Down Heritage Centre in Bangor. The increasingly popular event features the cream of Irish writing talent and promises to deliver an exhilarating programme.

Over the years the festival has attracted all the big names, from Seamus Heaney to Jack Higgins, inspiring lively debate and erudite literary chats. There are also plenty of workshops for budding authors, the chance to discuss writing with the star guests and lots of readings.

Grants for Arts Groups Scheme

Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee’s Arts Grant Scheme is designed to assist arts events, projects or activities, which take place in the City of Lisburn through the provision of direct grants or guarantees against loss.

The strategic objectives of Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee in supporting arts organisations through the Arts Grant Scheme are:

* To improve access to the arts,
* To encourage a lively relationship between the arts and those who live in, work in and visit the City of Lisburn,
* To promote awareness of, appreciation of, and participation in the arts throughout the community,
* To support and encourage best practice in the arts,
* To contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of City of Lisburn,
* To enhance the image of the City of Lisburn.

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria and subject to the availability of funds. The submission of incomplete data or absence of information may cause a delay in assessment, so applicants are urged to provide as much detail as possible when applying.

All applications will be assessed in the light of the number of applications received and the resources available at the time of assessment.

The Organising Body must:

* Be based in the City of Lisburn and/or have its main operational focus in the City of Lisburn
* Be a properly constituted arts organisation
* Demonstrate sufficient experience to carry out the project
* Demonstrate a need and demand for the project
* Demonstrate that efforts have been made to raise income or assistance from other sources other than Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee.

The Projects must:

* ·Address some/all of the strategic objectives of Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee’s arts grants scheme
* ·Be effectively planned, budgeted and have clear aims and objectives
* ·Be accessible to the general public
* ·Be adequately marketed and publicised throughout the City of Lisburn
* ·Represent value for money from Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee’s point of view
* ·Demonstrate equal opportunity for all sections of the community from the City of Lisburn that are non-party political and non-sectarian.

It is Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee’s intention that support be given to a broad range of artistic disciplines. No applications for building programmes, ongoing revenue costs, assistance to cover loans or deficits, projects which could be undertaken on a commercial basis, charity fund-raising events, capital equipment or the hire fees of Council Premises will be supported. Grants under this Scheme are not given to individuals*, to projects that require retrospective funding, or projects that are underway at the time of assessment.

*Individuals should apply to the Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee Arts Grant Scheme for Individuals/Artists.

It is anticipated that the maximum grant awarded to any organisation in one year is £2,400 and there is a total budget of around £18,000 per year.

How to Apply

Allow a 3-month lead-in-time from the deadline for submission of the application and the date of the commencement of the project for the Committee to assess the application. Please see application form for details of dates.

Lisburn Arts Advisory Committee considers applications under the Arts Grant Scheme on a quarterly basis i.e. once every 3 months.

Irish Woodturners' Guild Annual Seminar


The demonstrators will include Mike Mahoney from USA, Carlyn Lindsay, Mick Hanbury and Andrew Hall from the UK and from Ireland Mark Hanvey and Pat Carroll, there will be 7 competitions andthe Competition Hall will be open to the public along with the Trade Stands Hall.

Everyone is welcome to attend for all or part of the Seminar - those who are not members of the Irish Woodturners' Guild will have to pay a small additional fee to attend the demonstrations.

Cinemagic Special

As part of their educational launch Cinemagic have teamed up with NI Assembly, Care and Unite against Hate for a special event on 27 September at Parliament Buildings, Stormont Estate. Young people interested in politics and cinema will have the chance to critically analyze the classic film ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and examine issues that are relevant to today’s society here in Northern Ireland, with a special focus on the consultation of the Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration.

The audience will also have the opportunity to take part in a discussion that will allow them to share their views on the government programme. The resulting summary will be forwarded to OFMDFM. For more information or to take part please contact projectmanager@uniteagainsthate.org.uk.

Family History Festival - Ballymoney

venue: Ballymoney Tourist Information Centre

The Route Back Home 2010 is a family history festival focusing on the genealogy of Ballymoney and district, the region traditionally known as 'the Route'.

In recent years, Ballymoney Museum has discovered that more and more family historians are arriving in the North Antrim area to study their ancestors.

The main event will take place on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 October 2010.
In additional, a coach trip to local church graveyards and other historical sites is scheduled for Thursday 30 September (optional event an additional fee of £15 for each seat including lunch applies).
